Before we started our documentary we went to go see the documentary "I Am Not Your Negro". We watched this documentary to get inspiration for the documentary. Before watching the documentary we ready many articles on James Baldwin. The film had a lot of B roll and many other things that gave me inspiration for my documentary.
In our documentary we have to interview people and leading up to the interview we did practice interviews in class. I interviewed two female teachers from KIPP Adelante Preparatory Academy and I got to know their stories. We asked them questions about race and what it's like to be a women in today's society. It was interesting learning about their views and getting to know them.
After we did our interviews it was time to start writing our script for our documentary. I had a pretty difficult time doing this because we had to find a way to combine two stories from two different people. We went through many drafts of our script so we can make it flow all together. After we had our final script done we did a voice recording of the script. We started putting the clips and the voice over together. We we got critique we were told that out video had a few editing problems and lacked creativity. We fixed the editing problems and we added creativity by adding music, pictures, and quotes.
We did this documentary in partners and I'm used to working with partners because I have been at this school since middle school. Our partnership was a good partnership because we divided the work evenly, supported each other, and included both of our ideas.
Final Script:
(B-roll of the streets)
DIALOGUE
Narrator: We each have our own story with unique moments; Channel and Christine are both very important individuals who contribute to our society. Channel is currently enrolled at community college here in San Diego. As for Christine she’s a college advisor at Kipp Adelante Preparatory Academy.
(B-roll of the school)
Narrator: Though they both struggle their stories are not the same. Channel is a transgender woman who has struggled with coming out and transitioning. (B-roll of a pride flag) She’s a strong woman who’s gone through a lot, but through it all she’s never let any of it get to her.
(Insert clip 1:57 “Ever since I was a kid I always knew that I didn’t fit into most people's norms…”)
Narrator: Just like Chanel, Christine has also felt a little different and wasn’t accepted sometimes because of the color of her skin. Christine is a Puerto Rican women who was raised in a large family. (Insert a clip of Christine talking but have it muted when the narrator is talking then unmute it when she says the quote below)( Video 5045)
“Race is different because race is the color you are and it's always weird because I'm light skin but I don't see myself white.”
Narrator: When she went to school it was different. She felt accepted there and always felt known and understood.
(Insert clip 1:30-2:04 IMG_7436.MOV “I always went to schools that were pretty diverse and pretty accepting like I never felt much like an outsider. I guess I’ve always felt known and understood.” )
Narrator: Christine was positively and negatively influenced when she was living in a big household. She had parents and a big family who supported her through everything.
(Insert clip: 0:15-0:56 IMG_7436.MOV “I think positively my mom and dad always wanted me to do well in school, They never really put pressure on me to do well but that was kind of the expectation in the household so I did do well….. I think negatively with a big family there are many opinions and a lot of criticism and that negatively affects you.” )
Narrator: Unlike Christine, Channel didn’t have the support she needed.
(Insert clip: 16:48-17:27. Mom not really accepting )
Narrator: Not everyone gets the support they need and that’s what makes everyone different. Everyone goes through stuff in their life.
(Insert clip: 1:57 “Ever since I was a kid I always knew that I didn’t fit into most people's norms...
2:04 . I knew I wasn't regular or normal as most people say I just know I wasn't going to be like anybody else”)
Narrator: Christine felt different as well.
(Insert clip: IMG_5048.MOV “The lady wouldn’t sell her a ticket but then she sold tickets to a white couple”)
Narrator: They both have had struggles in their life and they overcame them and now love who they are and accept themselves.
(Insert clip: 2:40-3:05 . being myself
3:30-3:30-3:50 . don't let people push me over... do me and only

(Insert clip: 0:1- IMG_5044.MOV “You have to know that race exist and you have to know that you have to be proud of it and you have to know what to do to defend other people who come from different races.” )
